Top 30 Anime Series of All Time

Yep, I’ve finally put together a top shows list. As I hopefully made clear in part one and part two of my critical biases post, this is obviously my list – it represents the things I think are most valuable in stories in the way I think they’ve best been articulated. It’s also just a list of shows I enjoy – there’s no hard criteria here, so I wouldn’t stress the numbers too much. Also, it’s a bit front-loaded – I only started watching anime seasonally about two years ago, so the last couple years are disproportionately represented. Incidentally, I’m not including movies here either – I think direct comparisons between shows and films are a bit of a stretch, but if they were included, this list would certainly be somewhat different. And finally, I’m absolutely (and thankfully) certain this list will change over time – there are still piles of widely beloved shows I’ve never seen, so I’m sure the current rankings will be filled out in the years to come. So with that all said, let’s get to the list – Bobduh’s Top 30 Anime of All Time.

-edit- I have now created a Top Shows Addendum for shows that have either fallen off or just barely missed this list. Please enjoy these additional almost-top shows!

30. Flip Flappers

Flip Flappers marries the blossoming artistic vision of many of anime’s most talented young animators to a story teeming with the rich psychological inquiry that anime does so well. Centered on a girl on the verge of young adulthood who feels too paralyzed by consequences to decide who she wants to be, Flip Flappers takes her on a wild adventure through a series of evocative alternate realities, all of which ultimately reflect back on the human interiority of her own world. Flip Flappers appreciates the inherent beauty of our distinct internal worlds, and pairs a wild tour through the human experience with a core character arc that reflects thoughtfully on the complexity of love, identity, and growing up. Slotting somewhere thematically between FLCL and Evangelion, it is a can’t-miss addition to anime’s coming-of-age pantheon.

Here’s my review of Flip Flappers.

Flip Flappers is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

29. Gatchaman Crowds

Gatchaman Crowds Best Anime List

Gatchaman’s a goddamn busy show – in the course of a 12-episode run, it covers everything from internet culture to crowdsourcing to the necessity of leadership to social responsibility to human nature to… well, you get the idea. And it explores all these ideas while also staying remarkably light and breezy – you could enjoy the show purely as a fun, visually interesting, musically brilliant adventure without even thinking about how identity is constructed in the digital age, or whatnot. And when you combine these two strengths, you get a show that proves you don’t have to be dry to be smart – you can make awesome points about how the internet will change the world without ever giving up a sense of fun and moment-to-moment excitement. Brain food and comfort food at the same time.

Here’s my review of Gatchaman Crowds.

Gatchaman Crowds is available at Amazon and streams on Crunchyroll.

28. Giant Robo

Giant Robo Best Anime List

Giant Robo is Bombast Incarnate. Featuring an epic clash between the Experts of Justice and Big Fire, there’s no room for subtlety in this production – it’s all massive robots and deadly superspies and fights for the fate of the world. It’s also a beautiful thing – a series of seven OVAs released over most of a decade, the show is a gorgeous ode to classic super robot storytelling, brought to life with strong animation and rich colors and epic orchestral scores. And yet for all its larger-than-life size, the show also tells a gripping story, full of fully-articulated characters and reflections on family and human ambition. Giant Robo essentially feels like the final act of the Greatest Robot Story Ever Told – it has absolute confidence, and earns the viewer’s trust through constant dramatic hooks and total polish in execution. Even if you generally like smaller stories, I’d give Giant Robo a chance.

Here’s my essay on Giant Robo.

Giant Robo is vaguely available on Amazon.

27. Bokurano

Bokurano manages the difficult feat of staying tonally downcast and even desolate at all times while simultaneously conveying an unflinching message of optimism, and belief in humanity as a species. Its premise is terribly arbitrary and cruel, and very few members of its young cast survive, but the stories they tell in their leaving reflect the kaleidoscopic spectrum of the human experience. Its compelling scifi narrative ultimately becomes little more than a stage for its young stars to shine, as they each take up an impossible mantel and fight on behalf of their species, their cruel guide mocking them all the while. But Bokurano does not believe in its guide’s cynicism; though the world it posits is harsh, its young heroes shine all the brighter for it.

Here’s my review of Bokurano.

Bokurano is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

26. Sound! Euphonium

Sound! Euphonium Best Anime List

Kyoto Animation excel at making quietly excellent little dramas, and Sound! Euphonium counts as one more feather in their distressingly pincushioned cap. The show is as gorgeous as you’d expect, the drama is understated but well-articulated, and the episodes are full of those alternately funny or poignant little moments that KyoAni’s mastery of animated storytelling always provokes. And Kumiko is one of the most fun people you could possibly follow around a story like this, with her snark and clumsy bluntness making her a refreshing and relatable protagonist. You can enjoy this show for its close viewing of the classic band experience, for its funny mess of jokes and characters, or for its well-articulated personal drama and reflections on goals and identity. It succeeds on all levels, making it one of the most impressive and fully realized high school dramas around.

Sound! Euphonium is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

25. Hunter x Hunter 2011

Hunter x Hunter 2011 Best Anime List

As the only long-running shounen on my list, HxH’s a bit of an outlier. But HxH is not your typical shounen – directed by Madhouse (likely my pick for the best studio of all time) and adapted from a source by the writer of Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter is basically a master class in what makes adventure entertaining. Though it starts off “only” demonstrating it knows how to make challenge-based television entertaining (in lieu of actual fights, it generally sets up compelling puzzles of all shapes and sizes for its heroes), it ends up jumping from genre to genre, dabbling in crime thriller, tournament shounen, and even war drama. And through it all, the show’s fantastic aesthetics elevate it above almost everything out there – in direction, in sound design, in pacing, in animation, in basically every relevant aesthetic metric, Hunter x Hunter triumphs. That it’s been maintaining this level of quality for well over a hundred episodes is nothing short of astonishing – in fact, I’d say Hunter x Hunter has only gotten better over time.

Here’s a critical breakdown of HxH episode 116, and here’s an essay on the recently concluded (and breathtaking) Chimera Ant arc.

Hunter x Hunter 2011 is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

24. Mushishi

Mushishi Best Anime List

Mushishi is one of those strange, special shows that seem to just emerge confident and fully constructed, exude excellence for all of their running time, and then go quietly on their way. Its vignettes are dreamy and ambiguous, full of resonance and compelling ideas but never didactic. Its world is mysterious and enchanting, evoking both a more resigned and possibly more dangerous version of Miyazaki’s mystical forests. Its production is fantastic, with beautiful backgrounds matching a wonderfully understated musical score and a great sense of pacing to conjure its powerful, singular atmosphere. And all this works in service of a show that’s fundamentally just incredibly calming and sedate – a series of long, lazy afternoons spent enjoying the company of a master storyteller.

Here’s my essay on Mushishi.

Mushishi is available at Amazon and its sequel streams on Crunchyroll.

23. Gunbuster! + Diebuster!

Gunbuster vs Diebuster Best Anime List

Grouped together because they really do feel like two sides of the same coin, both of Gainax’s Buster shows would also make this list independently. Flippant and heartbreaking, cynical and triumphant, personal and universal, each of these OVAs tells a story of humanity’s struggle against all the forces of the universe with style and heart. And each can stand alone, as well – Gunbuster is helmed by a pre-Eva Anno already exhibiting his unnerving style of direction, and Diebuster offers a very appropriate conclusion to the FLCL era of Gainax production. Only six episodes each, too – it’s pretty remarkable how much story each of these manage to tell.

Here are my essays on Gunbuster and Diebuster.

Both Gunbuster and Diebuster are available at Amazon.

22. Shinsekai Yori

Shinsekai Yori Best Anime List

Shinsekai Yori is basically tailor-made for fans of fantasy and scifi novels. Heavy on worldbuilding and questions of human nature, its story unfolds on a scale far greater than most anime, exploring a compelling dystopian society by following one generation from childhood through adolescence and well into adulthood. Though I often feel its characters fade into the background of its storytelling pretensions, it all works in service of an incredibly compelling central narrative, and its devastating conclusion justifies everything that came before. It’s a rare and valuable thing – few shows work on the scale of Shinsekai Yori.

Here’s my review of Shinsekai Yori.

Shinsekai Yori is available at Amazon and streams on Crunchyroll.

21. The Idolm@ster

The Idolmaster Best Anime List

An idol show?!? I could actually go on for a while about what makes various idol shows great (and I have), but as far as Idolm@ster specifically goes, this show is just a solid episodic drama that succeeds in almost everything it attempts. It’s got a rich and well-developed cast of characters, lots of great little character stories, and a bunch of fun adventures like “the team runs a Sunday game show” or “one idol ends up as a runaway bride while another fights yakuza goons.” On top of that, Idolm@ster features one of the best creative teams in recent memory – a bunch of former Gainax staff and other great creators combine to make this one of the most beautifully directed and animated shows I’ve seen. Even if you don’t have any interest in idols, Idolm@ster’s combination of fun stories and gorgeous execution makes it a rare and impressive show.

Here’s my review of The Idolm@ster.

The Idolm@ster is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

  1. Well done, nice #1. Thanks for not including the childy brotherhood stuf. I want to see the rest of utena but those dvds are so expensive.

    • Nah I don’t agree with this top 30. I like action/romance like first season of Sword Art Online, No Game No Life or pure action like Akame Ga Kill! Plus, since it’s 2014, anime like The Seven Deadly Sins, Trinity Seven, the new Fate series and lots more have been released. If you like romance though try Golden Time. It’s really good and it gives a taste of struggles with your past. Try Blade Dance of the Elementalers for comedy/action/Romance although it isn’t as good as some others.

PS. IF WATCHING AKAME GA KILL THERE ARE EXTREMELY SAD MOMENTS. LIKE THEY WILL MAKE YOU CRY FOR A WEEK.

      • What do you mean first season of Sword Art? Don’t you know there is only one? love that show…cough perfect ending

      • The second season is out with already 16 episodes made, around 10 eps left to be released, getting released every saturday..

BTW the name of the second season is simple enough “Sword Art Online II”

    • Evangelion is for sure one of my favorite animes ever, but i think death note should be at least top 10.

  2. Thank you for this list!
I’m fairly new to the Anime genre and I use MAL to find the top rated shows and go and watch them.
The problem is that there are high rated show which I don’t find particularly good or just don’t draw me into the story (Baccano!, FLCL). But this would probably also mean that there are plenty of excellent shows out there that have a lower ranking but that I would like very much (Shiki, Kyousogiga for example).
The problem is that I won’t find them easily (because of their rankings above 300) unless people like you take the time to write a blog about them.
    Keep up the good work!
    TUSTC

  3. I have to say I think Bleach should be on the list, I’m sure people will disagree, but who cares it’s my opinion

    • Bleach was alright for the first couple seasons. Then it slowly turned into Dragonball Z. Float in the air Flash flash flash “Oh, I see you’re stronger than me, and I will soon be defeated. Now I will change to my THIRD transformation, that even I didn’t know existed until just now!” Powerup scene Flash flash “How is this possible? No one should be this powerful!” Special flashy ending move with a name repeat ad nauseam. Not even close to top 30.

      • yeah i think that this is the perfect description however the first seasonish should be on here after that it just gets strait boring

    • Bleach is so horrible. Every episode I’ve seen is just people floating in the air, taunting each other. And then a few poorly animated fight scenes and predictable cliche story.

  4. I want to start off by saying I agree with your taste in anime a lot. I have a very similar taste. I also see you have gotten quite a lot of comments so if you take your time to read this, I appreciate it. I have noticed that no where on any of your lists lies “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic” and its sequel “Magi: The Kingdom of Magic.” It is one I love and hope you check it out.

    • I very much agree. I love this anime and it tops my list. It’s fairly new, so not everybody is familiar.

    • I certainly like Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic but it has pacing issues. I have yet to watch its sequel so I cannot give an opinion on it.

  5. seriously………….not even naruto dude……..come on i just have to me in the top i dont know 15 or something :/

      • Your an idiot if ur not going to watch atleast the cannon. Naruto is one of the best anime out there and kishimoto will be remembered as a legend.

    • To Anonymous who just called me an idiot,

Heck. If I am going to settle for a long running shounen show, then my money’s on One Piece or Fairy Tail. I hate animes with fillers covering over 40 plus episodes. Argh.

PS: At least, I know the difference between your and you’re. Geez.

  6. I revisited just to see if you, by chance, did decide to update this organically, and you have! Anyways, I’m glad to see Mushishi on there now, and I feel like our tastes, for the most part, line up. It’s more like, my top ten is your 20-10 range, and your top ten is my 20-10 range. XD Anyways, I am curious on if you have seen Kara no Kyoukai or Bakuman. Two anime that I feel like you would appreciate, in what I fell like, on the same pedigree as these blessed thirty.

  7. wtf thats one crappy ass list. it should be
    1. Code Geass
    2. Death Notes
    3. Clannad/ AS
    4. Ouran High School Host Club
    5. Mirai Nikki
    6. Hunter X Hunter
    7. Attack On Titan
    8. Naruto
    9. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
    10. Baccano!
    11. Stein; Gates
    12. Baccano!
    13. Angel Beats
    14. Anohana
    15. Sword Art
    16. No Game No Life
    17. Elfen Lied
    18. Toradora
    19. Durarara
    20. Claymore
    21. Guilty Crown
    22. Psycho Pass
    23. Monster
    24. NeoGenesis Evangelion
    25. Gintama
    26. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagen
    27. Cowboy Bebop
    28.Fate/Zero
    29. Maid Sama
    30. Lovely Complex

    • I must say I agree with that list you have there. Most of those anime are simply badass and good. One of my personally favorites are No game no Life. But still, this is his/her list of anime, so idk why people always say they suck. If you don’t like it, then ok, go to someone else’s list. Anime lists should be viewed by people who want some good suggestions on what to watch, no by people who are there to judge the whole damn list.

    • Mirai Nikki SAO, Naruto and guilty crown. seriously? Ok, well if you take out the best part of each anime, maybe. but as a whole they arent so great :/

  8. Excellent list, dont let the plebs get you down, one suggestion would be legend of the galactic heroes and shin sekai yori. Many of my favorites are in your top :D.

  9. dear lord the retardation of these comments, just wow… Shows like utena, madoka, cowboy beebop, katangatari, and most things on this list are leagues above the pop corn anime like code geass and death note. They are even eons ahead of most shounnens, With hunter hunter, jojo, fma, and gintama being exceptions. Pls go watch your attacking of titans and your no game no life’s, adults are talking. For you plebs who wanna come at me im on MAL : RAPTOR1221. Don’t dirty this thought out list with your plebery.

  10. i love how you give the strengths of the anime you love.. and my most fave anime is there OREGAIRU!! XD

  11. good list but we all know one piece chould be there and naruto, if you watch this you would know is not all about action, but many feeling

  12. Wow got a great list here!! The problem with creating a “top/best anime of all time” list is most of the time (intentionally or not) it is influence by the author’s preferences/dislikes. So if you guys really want to know what are the BEST animes to watch you can refer on websites that rates anime based on many users evaluation or have a non biased formula that is rated by many viewers. My suggestion is you can visit animenewsnetwork or myanimelist. You may also go on imdb but the problem here is sometimes they also include cartoons LOL. On these sites you can see that they have almost identical lists especially on the top. But afterall we still pick our favorites base on our likings haha. Well your top 30 is still great for recommendations. =)

  13. Thanks for the list. We match up well on what anime we enjoy, so I’ll be checking out those on your list that I haven’t gotten around to yet. If I could make one recommendation though. Check out Honey and Clover, an anime I consider the most beautiful romantic comedy ever created.

  14. I thought the most obvious truism at the End of Evangelion was that during Instrumentality Shinji was the one on bottom 😉

  15. This list friggin sucks. not because the animes are bad, but because the way you wrote about each anime was way to abstract and didnt help decide whether or not I should watch it. Complete waste of time, unless someone gives a crap about what u personally feel about each anime.

    • Oh, I see. So he/she should instead have written about what YOU personally feel about these animes, not the other way around. That makes perfect sense, remind me to ask you for more brilliant ideas in the future.

    • I for one thought that his descriptions of Utena and Gatchaman Crowds were intriguing enough that I decided to watch them before anything else on the list.

  16. who gives a crap abt imdb.their list is the dumbest i’ve ever seen.those morons put animes n cartoons on the same boat.English cartoons hv always been for nipplesucking kids.those idiots voted shit like the Dragonball franchise n naruto n OP in the first 20.Pal,check myanimelist.com esp the underrated animes list n u’ll knw thier place-in the crapper!
Oh!By the way FMA is in my top 10.just dont lyk the idea of placing it alongside those junk cartoons n DB,OP,Naruto

    • Chill there, bro. Don’t underestimate Western cartoons. and btw, DBZ, OP and Naruto are animes too. And animes are Japanese cartoons, so it is normal to put them on the same boat. simply because anime and English cartoons are both cartoons. I agree about you on myanimelist but don’t go bitching about other people’s opinions. you’re making yourself look stupid. and may I inform you that this is the Internet. expect everything here. Keep that in mind. This is the Internet, once again.

  17. Okay I just can’t agree with this list. I just can’t imagine how OreGaIru, Chuunibyou, Hyouka, and Toradora are better than Steins;Gate. Steins;Gate deserved to be one of the best candidates for the 1st place. That is if you really understood every single minute on every episode and the movie. But meh, based on your list, I can tell that you’re not really into mystery or mind-blowing anime. Instead, you like romance/slice of life anime which is actually not bad. Well, keep it up! I respect your ranking. People really have different tastes which is very normal.

    • Out of those three, maybe Hyouka can actually displace Steins;Gate for its very amazing visuals. For me, it’s the most visually aesthetic anime I have seen and I know it will take some time before some show could take its title. Hyouka’s story is not bad. It’s actually like K-on with substantial plot and superior visuals.

PS: I am one of those guys who think Steins;Gate might be the best anime of this decade. Haha 😀

    • Steins gate is a good anime. However, is certainly not 1st place.
Toradora, on the other hand, is also a great anime. The use of character symbolism is great. Hyouka’s use of mystery and giving part answers to questions that do not have answers, are also nice. The way it develops one’s world view is on its own league. Chuunibyou’s symbolism of… well, chuunibyou
is also something worthy of respect. OreGaIru gives interesting character development and arguments is also good.
Steins;Gate on the otherhand is slightly inferior when it comes to these kind of things. Although setting and all other kind of thing is appealing, (esp MC and mayushi, imo) it is slightly superficial. It’s setting is definitely complex but is not too deep at the same time.
I feel this is where the writer decided to put Steins;Gate inferior to others. Although I agree Steins gate is very good and is probably better than some of the ones you mention.
P.S I understood the movie and everything after first watch.

  18. Titles worth considering: Cardcaptor Sakura, Ah! My Goddess, Great Teacher Onizuka, Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, Angelic Layer, Detective Connan, Honey and Clover, Nana, Tenchi Muyo!, Trigun, Earth Maiden Arjuna, Excel Saga.

    • Love these suggestions but angelic layer sucks, excel saga and gto are comedies (harder for comedies to get recognition) and Conan and ranma are shonen (hard to take them seriously). Almost all of those (and at the very least gto) would be on my top list.

  19. Hey great list, maybe I dont agree with the order but you mention a lot of good stuff.
In my opinon the most important shows that are missing from the list are:
    – Serial Experiment Lain
    – Kaiji (wasnt even mentioned in your MAL, you should watch it ASAP)
    – Legend of the Galactic Heroes (not mentioned in your MAL)
    – Welcome to the NHK (not mentioned in your MAL)
    – Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei (not in your MAL)
    – Nichijou (listed as ” Plan to Watch”)

Maybe it is ok not to include the three last ones in the list, but the first three are too big and too good not to be there.

  20. Well, here’s my personal top 25. I just watched anime recently and this list will change as I begin to see better shows.

    1. Cowboy Bebop
    2. Stein’s Gate
    3. Baccano!
    4. Clannad After Story
    5. Hyouka
    6. Puella Magi Madoka Magika
    7. Fate Zero
    8. Kyousougiga
    9. Shin Sekai Yori
    10. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
    11. Hunter x Hunter (2011)
    12. Toradora!
    13. Anohana
    14. Psycho Pass
    15. Bakemonogatari
    16. Yuyu Hakusho
    17. Kimi ni Todoke
    18. Angel Beats!
    19. Kuroko no Basuke
    20. Durarara!!
    21. Log Horizon
    22. Love, Chuunibyo and Other Delusions
    23. Slam Dunk
    24. Detective Conan
    25. Haikyuu!

PS: That was out of 100 animes I watched since 2013. Shingeki No Kyojin has an excellent soundtrack but has pacing issues and crude drawings. Don’t even begin with Sword Art Online – it’s the anime version of Twilight. As for the others, like Penguindrum, Eccentric Family, Utena, FLCL, Nana, Honey and Clover, Oregairu and Kids on the Slope, I have yet to watch those shows but given their reviews, these might displace some of the animes I have in this list.

      • Oh. Regarding Geass, I am yet to watch it so I cannot give an assessment but I heard that it’s good.

PS: Mawaru Penguindrum is a very very bizarre yet warm anime. It might land to my top 15. 😀

  21. HOW COULD YOU NOT FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST OR FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD ON THIS LIST! OR DEATH NOTE! THEY’RE MY FAVORITE

  22. This list is actually amazing and it’s rare to read summaries that share my form of analysis and opinions. I’ve only seen half of these shows and I can’t thank you enough for giving me another 15 awesome anime to try all in one place. 🙂
p.s mushishi should be slightly higher up the list I feel, but thats about it.

  23. Not even 1 horror anime on the list? Not even a ps saying “hey… btw if you are tired of the ordinary you should try death note. Shiki. Mirai nikki. Another. Tokyo ghul. Deadman wonderland or some other alternative stuff

  24. At least i’m not the only sucker for romance stuff. Whew.
Romance and comedy are my sort of choices. But this list is comprehensive in suggesting a good anime!

Personally though, Baka to testo shoukanjuu is one of my favourites. Funny as heck.

in order, this would be my list (of 10)

    1) Baka to testo shoukanjuu
    2) Code Geass (both seasons)
    3) D-Frag
    4) K-ON! (Both seasons)
    5) Kokoro Connect
    6) Noragami
    7) No Game No Life
    8) Sword Art Online (second season was, and is from halfway through the Phantom Bullet arc, bad)
    9) Azumanga Daioh (A bit of a bore at the start, but it’s retardedly funny at the end)
    10) Chuunibyou demo Koi ga shitai

  25. -Rurouni Kenshin
    &
-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

How the fuck these haven’t yet been stated, is baffling.

“Earth is a conductor of acoustical resonance.”

  26. As someone who has recently picked up on watching anime for the first time in around a decade (aside from a few series or movies here or there), I appreciate this list. Most of the series featured on this list are there because, at least according to the author, they feature good character and/or story elements. Why do I trust the this list? Because it’s being shit on by all the Bleach/One Piece/Naruto fans. I don’t hate those shows – they’re necessarily bad, but they are far from the pinnacle of character depth or storytelling. Believe me, I grew up with DBZ, and in middle school I thought it was the greatest piece of fiction ever. I’ll still watch it sometimes, but that’s out of nostalgia, not because it’s a “good” show.

Being that I’m just getting back into anime, I’m torn between watching some of the more popular shows of recent years (for the sake of being able to talk about them) and watching series that are actually good. Sure there’s some overlap – Steins;Gate was very enjoyable, and Madoka was absolutely wonderful. But I’m also about halfway through Attack on Titan, and honestly it blows.

So, thanks again for making this list – it gives someone like me a good idea of what anime to watch next.

    • Hey, I somehow feel the same. Why not check this out: Code Geass, Zetsuen No Tempest, Brave 10, 07 Ghost, Mirai Nikki, Code Breaker. Don’t know what genre you prefer but I PERSONALLY like them, thinking maybe you wanna see it. So hope you enjoy watching. Won’t give you a long list since you’ll still have to choose what to watch first. Lols. Let me know what you can say. If you can suggest some good anime to watch, let me know as well. Thanks!

      • It’s a blessing and a curse that I’ve been out of the loop for so long, in that there are so many shows I’m curious to watch, but it’s hard to decide which to watch next. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll add them to my list. There’s no one genre that I’m drawn too, but I do enjoy fantasy/sci-fi shows with well-developed worlds and histories. As such, I’m a sucker for Gundam stuff, and I’ve been working my way through the many UC series. If that’s your kind of thing, I’d recommend 08th MS Team. It’s side-story set during the same time-frame as the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, so you sorta need to have a rough understanding of the events of that series to fully know what’s going on, but it’s well worth it.

Aside from that, some of my faves are already on the list (Bebop, Madoka, Eva, Gurren Lagann), but I’m also fond of Vision of Escaflowne.

      • Ah I see. If that’s case, Code Geass is highly recommend then. I feel somehow relieved to hear that from you, at least we can share different views. I haven’t watched much animes, I can say. I like almost every anime I watched, it’s the simple little things that make me appreciate every piece. From the way they look, they smile, the way they speak (though I don’t understand Nihonggo fully) the reason they think, live, love and fight; friendship, brotherhood, bonds, betrayal, faith. Name it and you’ll find it. Can’t phrase the perfect word to describe ANIME for me. 🙂 I’m abut to say “ja ne” but I guess it’s “sayonara”. Thanks!

  28. I’ve only started watching anime this month and have been searching all over for ones like on this list, really couldn’t take SAO, naruto, one bleach, etc. Being picky, I’ve only watched GiTS, Pyscho-Pass, NGE so far. I am actually mind blown and almost regret not having watched Japanese anime earlier in my life. ‘Almost’ because of NGE. I initially watched it thinking it would nail what I wanted but instead I was left with (hugely) regretting wasting my time on it. Maybe I am too old.. I felt I would have learnt something from it if I had watched it in junior high school perhaps. It felt like a bildungsroman – but unlike a classic – left me with nothing to learn. Having found this list I can’t wait to watch some of these animes, but with NGE topping I’m a bit hesitant. I completely love Psycho-Pass and GiTS and am thinking of watching Cowboy Bebop soon. Would you be able to recommend any that are like those two but unlike NGE?

    • Code Geass, Steins;Gate and FMA Brotherhood. In that order. Well maybe some other animes in between.

      • Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve definitely noted them down but I’ve decided to start with Texchnolyze, Ergo Proxy, or Monster (just by what I’ve read up so far) when I get the time 🙂 Any other reco’s would be deeply appreciated.

  30. Personally I am a Shounen fan, so I happen to like the shows most of you are trashing I.e. Naruto and One Piece, but that fine, its your opinions… I havent really watched many of the Anime you put up on your list but thanks for the suggestions, im hoping to catch up in them. I also just wanted to add that Naruto and One Piece shouldnt really be trashed so much; sure they were pretty childish in the beggining but as the writers of their Manga grew both Anime’s became breath taking shows… I admit at first I couldnt stand them at first and they were rather childish but I have never regretted giving them a chance… Btw from your list I think you would love the Magi and the Fate series…

    • Naruto, Bleach and One Piece all had their prime times which were fabulous. Other than that, they are quite a let down. Especially because of fillers and the poor anime quality in most of its show
