Fall 2014 – First Episode Reflections, Part Two

The ride NEVER EVER ENDS. I have watched a truly madness-inducing quantity of anime, and the fruits of my labors are here for you. Since the last update, I’ve put up first episode reviews for In Search of the Lost Future, Fate/stay night, World Trigger, CROSS ANGE, Wolf Girl and Black Prince, Celestial Method, Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, The Fruit of Grisaia, Gugure! Kokkuri-san, When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace, Laughing Under the Clouds, Akatsuki no Yona, and Trinity Seven. That is way too much goddamn anime.

Of that formidable list, the only shows I’d actually recommend for everyone are Fate/stay night and Rage of Bahamut: Genesis. More genre-specific fare would Celestial Method, Gugure! Kokkuri-san, When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace, and The Fruit of Grisaia. That is, if you like feelsy dramas, 4koma comedies, Haruhi-style club shows, or nicely animated drama/harem-things, those would be my choices respectively. EVERYTHING ELSE WAS PAIN. Nah, just Cross Ange, but seriously – way too much anime. Fortunately, my next update should be more proportionally positive. I’ll let you know!

Gugure! Kokkuri-san

    • Really liked it – it’s probably my third-favorite premier, after Parasyte and FSN. Hopefully it gets picked up for streaming.

  1. Why isn’t Parasyte in your “must watch” list? Your matches mine but only missing that show!

    • Calm your gallbladder, he gave it a 5, I’m sure he just hadn’t watched it at time of writing. (It’s not in the list of shows).

    • I think he simply hadn’t watched it yet when he wrote this. There’s little arguing that Parasyte was brilliant. Looks like Madhouse redirected the resources freed from HunterXHunter to yet another oldie-but-goldie!

  2. More of Chaika, the “little adventure that could”? Sign me right the heck up.
As for other shows, I was a bit dismissive of Parasyte before – it gave me a “The Thing” vibe, which is hard to get right – but your review of ep 1 has swayed my opinion.
And Cross Ange? F*ck no. Just no.

    • Glad to hear you’ll check out Parasyte. It’s just such a well-done thing that I think anyone should at least give it a try.

  3. I can’t believe that Twintails show is actually a thing.

Are you planning to watch any more of it after the first episode?

    • Apparently it is.

It was rather stupid but funny in a dumb way. I think the huge amount of shows took a toll on Bob (wait, should I call him Nick now?) though, considering that he sort-of-appreciated Inou Battle – which wasn’t especially more original (though less fanservicey). Personally, I’m mostly sad that for how stupid it is, Twintail isn’t AS stupid as it could be. Like NouCome. Now THAT was a show that could do “stupid” right.

      • (sorry, that came out weird: I meant, that he sort-of-appreciated Inou Battle but didn’t like Twintail. I think Twintail just had the demerit of coming when he was already approaching is limit of how much mediocre-to-bad anime he could stand, is what I mean)

      • I was actually worried about this going in, but I haven’t really been feeling that fatigue so much. I just think Inou Battle was a lot more likable, and, I dunno, less boring than Twintails. Twintails felt like a really, really long 20 minutes.

      • Fair enough. Be it because I had more expectations going in for Inou battle than for Twintail, or because after all I enjoyed Twintail’s silly brand of tokusatsu parody more than Inou battle’s not-too-different take on the usual ‘school club life’ trope, I think I enjoyed the latter more. Some moments were boring, true, but I also managed to laugh out loud now and then, while Inou battle merely elicited an occasional smirk. Mostly, I feel like Inou battle misses its comedic times. The jokes could work but the punchlines are too overstretched. Which is a pity, because the core idea is a good starting point for comedy – especially seeing how absurdly broken the superpowers of the girls are (compared with the uselessness of the MC’s).
