Winter 2017 – First Impressions, Part One

The winter season has begun! Yes, it certainly has done that. So far, this season is pretty much confirming my initial impressions – we’re in for a ridiculous new anime dry spell, and it’d probably be best to open your backlog binders now. I say “Part One” in the title, but this may well be the only one of these roundups I get to before the final list – shows have just been coming out too fast for me to put one of these together, and so we’re starting off with about half the season already behind us. There have been a couple shows I might just maybe continue, though, so I guess it’s not all bad. Anyway, you can find the whole list of shows that have been covered right here, or click below to get a rundown of each of my scores with individual links!

Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu – 4.5/5

  1. Yep, for the most part this season looks terrible. I’m taking some time to catch up on old shows that I’ve not seen yet. (which should probably include Rakugo since I never finished it)

I’ve heard Interviews with Monster Girls dives into student-teacher romance later in the manga. I don’t know if the anime will get that far but that kind of thing has already thrown me off of a similar series I loved the anime of (Sweetness and Lightning, at least the anime for it is ambiguous as to whether Iida’s feelings are romantic or familial… That being said I don’t know how one-sided they are since I stopped reading it.)

Not having read the source material, maybe word of mouth isn’t the best thing to go off of, but personally that kind of relationship squicks me out because of the older teacher taking advantage of the younger student’s fragile emotional state. So even though it does seem like the kind of show I’d love otherwise I might have to give it a pass…

I know judging a piece of media’s morality isn’t the best way to go around doing things (because it is fiction) but at the same time, I dunno.

  2. You’re a good man, Nick. Glad I don’t have to do these preview guides every season. A bit of good news, though: While it likely won’t come to Netflix until the end of the season, the Little Witch Academia series started airing in Japan and it is utterly delightful. Just give the first episode a little peek if you ever need the motivation to keep going. You can do it!

  3. Yep,this is a season where one digs into their backlog. The studios are saving all their interesting stuff for the Spring season it seems.

    • the only good show for me this season is little witch academia which is pretty fun and enjoyable
