Why It Works: Nick’s Picks for Winter 2019

Well folks, you know the drill. With the winter season having unloaded its initial bounty, this week I offered my seasonal recommendation of Crunchyroll-specific properties in my Why It Works column. It wasn’t hard to fill the list this time, as even with several of my own favorite properties appearing on HIDIVE, this season is looking strong enough to easily fill a suite of recommendations. I’d frankly really like to be watching Endro! myself, but just can’t be sure I’ll have the time. Either way, enjoy some more picks!

  1. Looks like the comment section is filling up with rude, hateful remarks stemming from your Shield Hero review (despite this article not mentioning the show once.) I know you’re used to rolling with the punches of the internet’s more volatile personalities, but I still want to give some positive feedback to counteract all the negativity.

Thank you so much for writing that review. I know the anime community is a sprawling, often-frustrating beast, but the general reaction to this show genuinely scares me. It might be one of the most clean-cut horrid things I’ve ever seen, on the one hand nearly devoid of technical qualities (the writing is stale, the conflict jarringly unnatural, the entire world copy+pasted) and on the other romanticizes a master-slave relationship and frames rape as a tool women use to destroy the reputations of men in the first two episodes alone. Finding a prominent reviewer willing to thoroughly pan the show was SUCH a breath of fresh air, and I loved how you managed to be as scathing as possible without attacking the audience or anyone who enjoyed it. More than that though, I’ve found it inspiring the way you’ve handled the reactions. From all the comment chains I’ve read and unabashedly vicious tweets I’ve seen you tagged in, you’ve responded to the hate with understanding and maturity and I really think that’s worth drawing attention to. Regardless of what all of our opinions on various anime are I think we can all aspire to discuss those opinions in a healthier way, and in this instance you’ve really led by example. Keep up the good work.
