Ladies and gentleman, we have finally arrived. After fifteen episodes of setup and space adventures, Bodacious Space Pirates has at last reached the promise of its title: an entire yacht club’s worth of high schoolers, let loose and in command of a majestic pirate ship. As much as I love the Bentenmaru’s usual crew, it is even funnier to see them wince and grind their teeth as the equivalent of a litter of puppies is set loose on their delicate machinery. The yacht club almost blew up the ship just sending it into hyperspace; god knows what will happen if they actually have to cross blades with an enemy ship, or really accomplish anything more difficult than progressing through empty space. This production’s sturdy scifi groundings and slice of life stylings have at last converged into beautiful madness, and I am pretty much vibrating in my seat in anticipation of the chaos to come. Let’s return to Bodacious Space Pirates!

Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 15
At long last, the moment has finally arrived. From its very first episode, Bodacious Space Pirates has been promising an absurd mixture of high schoolers and space derring-do, echoing the heady and largely anime-specific combination exemplified by titans like Girls und Panzer, or like a dozen different ‘80s cybercrime OVAs. “Cute girls and scifi stuff” might stand as anime’s most enduring promise – directors across anime history have noted the necessity of “mecha and moe,” whether they’re lauding this trend or raging against it.
Rather than an absurdist stretch, Bodacious Space Pirates is actually one of the more grounded examples of the form. Frequently, it’s just sort of a default anime assumption that everyone is going to be young, beautiful, and wildly out of their depth, with only the occasional Evangelion wondering why this is the state of affairs. But Space Pirates’ own characters are surprised and amused by its improbable turns, lending the show a sense of realistic weight and self-effacing humor that amplify its distinct appeal. Space Pirates never indulges in the pandering its title might imply; it is as respectful of its female characters as it is of its hard scifi mechanics, drawing deadpan comedy out of the contrast between its concept and execution. The show’s straight-faced tonal contradictions are never more prominent or hilarious than when Marika is leading the yacht club to glory, so I’m eager to see her new crew board the Bentenmaru. Let’s get to the action!
Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 14
Hello everyone, and welcome back to Wrong Every Time. Today, if weather permits, I was thinking about taking a brief space flight, and perhaps checking in on the crew of the Bentenmaru.
Last episode saw Marika solidifying her alliance with the Serenity royal family, by which I mean she invited the princesses to her house for dinner. Marika possesses a unique combination of amiability and confidence that makes it easy for her to disarm basically anyone, turning political negotiations and pirate standoffs alike into conversations between friends. She is a master of drawing others into her pace, and as the leader of a crew of rowdy rapscallions, that skill is likely even more important than her general competency and intelligence.
Of course, Marika is at her best when she has a Spock to balance her inherent Kirk-ness – thus I’m hoping this episode will see the return of Chiaki, and more delightful bickering between our main pair. But whatever the future holds, I’m sure we’re in for a pleasant time as we return to Bodacious Space Pirates!
Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 13
Hello everyone, and welcome back to Wrong Every Time. Today we are presented with a vast and glittering starscape, offering a call to adventure as insistent as anything in fiction. There is no trepidation now, no fear of the unknown; Marika has won the support of her crew, and now has an improbable fairy tale of an adventure under her belt. Instead, this is the calm, comforting peace of the professional lull, as the Bentenmaru and her crew prepare for the storms to come.
With the Golden Ghost Ship arc now completed, I’m guessing we’ll be returning to Sea of the Morningstar, and reuniting with both Chiaki and the yacht club. The last set of episodes have served as a fine introduction to the Bentenmaru’s crew, and now that we’ve got a feel for these characters in their natural habitat, I’m eager to see them try and negotiate with Marika’s high school friends. Marika’s greatest talent might be her ability to naturally integrate into any community, and actually make the people around her feel more comfortable for her presence – but that gift certainly won’t extend to characters like Coorie or Schnitzer, so I’m expecting some charming awkwardness ahead. Either way, the slate is empty and the skies are clear as we return to Bodacious Space Pirates. Let’s see what the heavens hold!
Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 12
You folks ready to explore a ghost ship? Having outwitted Serenity’s forces and survived a goddamn rip in space itself, the Bentenmaru and her crew have at last arrived on the golden ghost ship, and are preparing to disembark. As we recently learned, the ghost ship is in fact a generation ship, housing countless bodies that may yet be held in cold sleep, just waiting to be revived. Of course, that reveal only prompts a handful of further questions, like why exactly all these residents of Serenity agreed to this voyage, or why the true nature of this ship has been so successfully obscured. Even Gruier has yet to reveal her motives here, though it’s not hard to imagine how the sudden reappearance of millions of Serenity citizens might impact the nation’s succession conflict. With the answers presumably lurking within the bowels of this mighty ship, let’s not waste any more time, and step onboard the golden ghost ship of Serenity!
Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 11
Hello everyone, and welcome back to the bridge. Everyone strapped in and securely fastened? I’d certainly hope so, considering we’ve been traveling through a perilous nebula for several episodes now, and just came under fire from a squadron of Serenity attack ships. That’s right, we’re returning to Bodacious Space Pirates, as Marika and her crew seek the Golden Ghost Ship of Serenity, at the command of their runaway princess!
Last episode was ultimately all about that runaway princess, as Gruier was forced to truly contend with the reality of this situation. Up until now, her adventure has likely felt more like an exciting field trip than a political ploy; she’s far from home, sure, but still vaguely certain that everything will work out okay. Confronted by hostile Serenity ships, Gruier was forced to confront the truth: she is now a princess in exile, and the ships and symbols which once promised security have all turned against her. Marika did her best to ease Gruier through this realization, but it is a difficult thing to learn that your home is gone. With no choice but to surge onward through the storm, let’s return to the bridge of the Bentenmaru!
Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 10
You folks ready for some space adventures? It’s been altogether too long since we checked in on the travels of Marika and her fearless crew, so today we’re returning to Bodacious Space Pirates, as our team at last sets off in search of the golden ghost ship of Serenity!
I know, I know, I’ve been saying that for like three straight episodes now. Well, the thing about Bodacious Space Pirates is that, in spite of its preposterous title and plentiful high school girls, it hews about as close to “hard scifi” as you’re likely to get in anime. Ships aren’t propelled by hopes and dreams in this show; they’re propelled by fuel you must purchase, and protected by defense systems you must maintain, and afforded freedom of movement by licenses that must be procured and renewed.
Through conveying the intersection of future space travel and bureaucracy in all its alleged glory, Bodacious Space Pirates emphasizes the true and ever-present danger of space, as well as the magnitude of Marika’s new responsibilities. This also means that the crew can’t simply fly off in search of destiny, and conveniently find it right after the ad break – they must plan, and prepare, and choose their moment. Fortunately, I think Marika actually has chosen her moment, and that in fact this precise pre-episode moment is the moment she’s chosen. So to make a long story short, let’s actually set off in search now, and find that glorious golden ghost ship!
Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 9
Folks, I’m thinking it’s about time for more Bodacious Space Pirates. We last left off the series on the cliffhangeriest of cliffhangers, as Marika found herself on the brink of confrontation with a seemingly hostile force. Though the point of this mission was ostensibly to gain more information on the ghost ship from Gruier’s associates, their initial assumption was that this meant they’d be meeting some kind of reconnaissance ship, with no real possibility of open conflict. Instead, Marika’s now facing down five Serenity combat vessels, one of them already having taken serious damage, prompting the very real possibility of Marika causing an interstellar political incident.
Of course, Marika’s already proven herself a capable mediator, and more practically speaking, we’re only eight episodes into a two-cour production. I can’t imagine Marika getting blown into space dust quite so soon into the show, but I’m eager to see how she avoids that possibility, so let’s dive on into another installment of Bodacious Space Pirates!
Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 8
Hello everyone, and good to see you back at Wrong Every Time. Today I’m eager to return to Bodacious Space Pirates, as it feels like we’re at last settling into the daily rhythm of Marika’s new life, and thus have finally been assigned a mission outside of the usual smash-and-grab performances. Well, I say “assigned,” but in truth Marika’s actually dealing with a stowaway, a young girl who apparently smuggled herself off the last cruiser full of under-stimulated vacationers. But either way, her arrival likely marks the end of Marika’s transition phase, and the beginning of her true captaining career.
It certainly seems like the right time to me. These last two episodes have been greatly instructive in terms of fleshing out the day-to-day nature of pirating in Marika’s universe, but they haven’t given Marika much of a chance to express her own approach to captaining, or given us all that much insight into Marika’s new teammates. Bodacious Space Pirates’ ability to lightly build up an ensemble cast through bridge chatter is one of its strengths, but I’d like to see Marika actually developing some trust with her crew, and this seems like a fine opportunity. Whatever challenges await, the bay doors are opening, and the sea of stars is shimmering ahead of us. Let’s get to it!
Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 7
Hello everybody, and welcome back to Wrong Every Time. Today we’ll be returning to Marika’s journey through the stars, as she continues to adjust to life as the legal captain of the Bentenmaru. Last episode was fully dedicated to speeding us through this transition, and actually accelerated the show’s pacing considerably, relative to its methodical first act. We sped through the legal portion of the procedure, and moved swiftly into her training on board, culminating in her successfully leading her first boarding operation.
That climax, framed more as a theater performance than a heist, left me with a number of questions about the nature of piracy in this universe. Pirates were initially offered Letters of Marque due to being conscripted as mercenaries in a local war; but after all the planets in this sector were swept up into the Galactic Empire, their role seems to have shifted more to something like “preserving local heritage,” taking advantage of the Empire’s decision to respect local rules of governance. In light of that, I’m not really sure who the pirates are working “for” at this point, and their cultural role seems to mostly be a kind of local flavor, a performance you enjoy because you know every single thing on a cruise ship is heavily insured. That’s an interesting role to play, but I’d be the first to admit that my understanding of the overall politics of this situation is still pretty tenuous, and I’m eager to learn more about Marika’s strange world. Without further ado, let’s get right on that, and check out a new episode of Bodacious Space Pirates!
