Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 6

Hello everybody, and welcome back to Wrong Every Time! Today I’m excited to dive back into Marika’s celestial adventures, as we join her intrepid team for another episode of Bodacious Space Pirates. The show’s previous episode served as the climax of its second mini-arc, as Marika, Chiaki, and their classmates managed to fend off an enemy boarding attempt, making excellent use of resident tech expert Lynn’s hacking skills, as well as Marika’s own confidence and quick thinking. Having passed what was essentially her pirate captaining practical exam, Marika has also come to a personal decision: she’s ready to take on her father’s legacy, and assume leadership of the Bentenmaru.

Of course, we’ve still got some preparations to consider before setting sail on that great starry sky. For one thing, Marika should probably set about actually recruiting her yacht club classmates, who’ve already proven they’re pretty much bridge-ready. And also, apparently Chiaki is a pirate captain too? That seems worth investigating. Regardless, the sails are beginning to unfurl above our young leads, and I’m eager to see their journey begin. Let’s get to it!

Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 5

You folks ready for a space battle? Today we’re returning to Bodacious Space Pirates on the brink of the team’s first genuine combat engagement, with Marika having developed a daring plan in order to trick their adversaries. Taking advantage of the apparently elite skills of team hacker Lynn, Marika hopes to fool their attackers by letting them take over a dummy duplicate of their own ship’s systems, only to turn the tides when the enemy moves in for the kill. With both Chiaki and team leader Jenny Dolittle on her side, Marika is riding high at the moment – but the fact of the matter is, Marika’s skills have yet to be tested by anyone who doesn’t actually want her to succeed. So far this has all been a fun intellectual exercise, but clashing with real pirates can invite real consequences, and it remains to be seen how Marika will handle the pressure of mid-battle command, or accepting the potentially fatal consequences of her decisions. With her first live fire exam about to commence, let’s return to the starry seas of Bodacious Space Pirates!

Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 4

Heads up folks, we’re returning at last to the starry skies of Bodacious Space Pirates. Last episode saw our heroine Marika seem to finally catch the space-faring bug, as her first space walk introduced her to the incredible grandeur and mystery of space. At the same time, Kane has been both testing and reinforcing her leadership abilities, while Chiaki seems to be slowly warming up to her chipper new classmate. But perhaps most importantly, episode three also demonstrated Bodacious Space Pirates’ satisfyingly thorough approach to conveying the mechanics of space travel itself, which seems like an excellent choice for a show centered on the dynamics of a ship’s bridge. I wasn’t really expecting such grounded, hard scifi storytelling from a show called “Bodacious Space Pirates,” but I’m happy to see it, and intrigued to find out how the show’s realistic and farcical elements continue to interact. Let’s get back into space!

Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 3

Folks, I think it’s about time for more Bodacious Space Pirates. This show hasn’t really taught me anything about the meaning of life yet, and it’s actually been mostly my comment section that has been teaching me about the meaning of piracy, but Bodacious Space Pirates is a very entertaining time, and I’m happy to return to it. When last we left off, Marika was at last starting to crack through the emotional defenses of her new classmate Chiaki, as the pair of them prepared to fend off an electronic assault on their class ship-slash-pirate relic. Having already demonstrated her strong piloting skills in the first episode, it seems like it’s time to test her leadership, quick thinking, and courage under pressure all at once. Let’s get to the pirating!

Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 2

Heya folks, and welcome back to Wrong Every Time. I’m currently feeling sick as a dog, having spent most of last night coughing and sniveling in the throes of my first winter cold. Fortunately, today we’ve got a sunny, energetic new project to explore, which will hopefully help me put my own bodily dysfunctions out of mind: Bodacious Space Pirates.

Bodacious Space Pirates’ premiere powered through the first part of Marika Kato’s call to adventure efficiently and with a great deal of charm, as she rapidly discovered that space pirates exist, her mother actually was one, and her father’s death has left her as the improbable heir to a legal pirate ship. In narrative terms, Marika’s story seems to echo old adventure serials, along with a healthy dash of school drama tropes, like the mysterious transfer student. In aesthetic terms, the show is quite pretty on the whole, with solid CG and fairly expressive characters. I’ll be interested in seeing if that unique visual sequence while Marika was having her history explained is a persistent trick, but on the whole, I’m ready for whatever this charming show offers. Let’s get to it!

Bodacious Space Pirates – Episode 1

Hello all, and welcome back to Wrong Every Time. Today we’re embarking on another new adventure, as we try out the first episode of something I have absolutely no experience with: Bodacious Space Pirates. Amazing title aside, I don’t really know what to expect from this one; its author Yuichi Sasamoto hasn’t had any other works adapted into anime, while its director Tatsuo Sato has lead a few notable series, but nothing I’ve actually seen. Sato’s most notable credits are likely Martian Successor Nadesico, Cat Soup, and Shigofumi, all of which have maintained some level of fame or prestige in anime circles, but his most recent credits have failed to have much staying power. All in all, what little context I do possess gives me no clear indication of what to expect here; I’m going in totally blind, with only the punchy charm of that old-timey adventure serial-esque title to guide me. Let’s explore the first episode of Bodacious Space Pirates!
