It’s generally a bad sign when I have to try and diagnose some work’s appeal in terms of cultural trends as opposed to aesthetic merit, but that’s kind of where I fall with Welcome to Night Vale. I’d heard about the show briefly in some other contexts – it played a central role in the legitimately entertaining story of Dashcon’s rise and fall, and The Mountain Goats’ Heel Turn 2 debuted on it, so I’d actually listened to a couple minutes while skipping to that. But taken in full, I just can’t really see the appeal here. So I guess I’ll explain it, and then maybe you guys can figure it out?

Criticulous (ANNcast) – Podcast
So, just showed up on ANNcast for the first time! This one was mostly about criticism philosophy, what sort of shows we like to cover and how, our history in criticism, and all that good stuff, and featured me, Zac, Hope, and Gabriella. Then there were a bunch of listener questions, including stuff like what shows we’d theoretically want to cover weekly, etc. A fair amount about our various approaches to writing, too. Check it out if you’re a podcast-liking person, and I hope you enjoy it!
New Podcast! Spring 2014 Action/Adventure/Fantasy
Hey guys, I was on this week’s Friday Anime Podcast, which you can check out over here. Aeroblip hosts as usual, and I’m accompanied by DreamKatari, lvlin, and redball. This one focuses loosely on this season’s action, adventure, and fantasy shows, and I’m actually only there for the first half, but we cover three of my favorites – Mushishi, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Hitsugi no Chaika. Check it out!
New Podcast – Spring 2014 Mid-Season Discussion
Yep, I was on another podcast this week, discussing season impressions with a bunch of other bloggers. I gush about Ping Pong, we argue about Sidonia and Titan, and basically everybody takes a few cheap shots at Mahouka. You can check out the whole thing over at Deadlight’s blog, which includes time stamps for specific show discussions and links to everybody else’s blogs. And if you enjoy the podcasts, it turns out I’m actually going to be a regular on these ones from now on, so, uh, lucky you!
Once again, here’s the link to the podcast. I don’t have anything else to say, so here’s Star Platinum punching a shark.
Seasonal Anime Podcast – Winter 2014
New podcast! I talk with Deadlight, Flawfinder, Landon, Psgels, and Sorrows Neptune all about our impressions of the current season, Studio White Fox, Masaaki Yuasa, and Gen Urobuchi, with a slight detour into how Type-Moon’s stories are the opposite of good storytelling. Fun for the whole family!
If you’d like timestamps, just click through to youtube for a breakdown of what we talk about when.
End of the Year Podcast Part Two
http://youtu.be/phKa8P9VSt0
More rambling about the year in review, this time covering our favorites from the Summer and Fall seasons, including Monogatari, Uchouten Kazoku, Kyousogiga, and whatever everybody else cared about. Also Kill la Kill, Gatchaman, White Album 2, Samurai Flamenco, etc.
Once again, you can find a list of all our many participants and a timestamp breakdown over at Deadlight’s blog.
End of the Year Podcast
http://youtu.be/-TITj1FIPEo
On another podcast! This time we’re discussing the year in review, including bits on basically any show that managed to sneak onto anyone’s top 10 list. Meaning everything from my actual list gets rambled about, along with Crime Edge, Hataraku Maou-sama, and almost everything else I watched. This first video covers up through the Spring season!
You can see more info/show timestamps over at Deadlight’s blog.
Podcast – Madoka: Rebellion
Link
Back on the airwaves, this time discussing the third Madoka film with IvIin, Kelloggs, and Aeroblip. Even if you haven’t seen the film, the first section of this podcast is spoiler-free, so you can get a glimpse of our overall impressions regardless. If you have seen it, this podcast is pretty damn thorough as far as our thoughts on narrative, themes, and production are concerned, and I think each of us brings a pretty distinct perspective to the table. Get on over there and give it a listen!
Podcast: Anime News, Fall Romance, and the Year to Date
So yep, I was on this week’s FAPcast with Kevo and Aeroblip of Desu ex Machina and Kelloggs of Pedantic Perspective. Lots of rambling on recent news (including thoughts about some encouraging western outreach stuff), the year in anime, and this season’s big romance standoff of Golden Time and White Album 2. Here’s the link again – check it out if you want to hear some more off-the-cuff stuff, or just listen to my uplifting, sonorous voice.
