Top 30 Anime Series of All Time

Yep, I’ve finally put together a top shows list. As I hopefully made clear in part one and part two of my critical biases post, this is obviously my list – it represents the things I think are most valuable in stories in the way I think they’ve best been articulated. It’s also just a list of shows I enjoy – there’s no hard criteria here, so I wouldn’t stress the numbers too much. Also, it’s a bit front-loaded – I only started watching anime seasonally about two years ago, so the last couple years are disproportionately represented. Incidentally, I’m not including movies here either – I think direct comparisons between shows and films are a bit of a stretch, but if they were included, this list would certainly be somewhat different. And finally, I’m absolutely (and thankfully) certain this list will change over time – there are still piles of widely beloved shows I’ve never seen, so I’m sure the current rankings will be filled out in the years to come. So with that all said, let’s get to the list – Bobduh’s Top 30 Anime of All Time.

-edit- I have now created a Top Shows Addendum for shows that have either fallen off or just barely missed this list. Please enjoy these additional almost-top shows!

30. Flip Flappers

Flip Flappers marries the blossoming artistic vision of many of anime’s most talented young animators to a story teeming with the rich psychological inquiry that anime does so well. Centered on a girl on the verge of young adulthood who feels too paralyzed by consequences to decide who she wants to be, Flip Flappers takes her on a wild adventure through a series of evocative alternate realities, all of which ultimately reflect back on the human interiority of her own world. Flip Flappers appreciates the inherent beauty of our distinct internal worlds, and pairs a wild tour through the human experience with a core character arc that reflects thoughtfully on the complexity of love, identity, and growing up. Slotting somewhere thematically between FLCL and Evangelion, it is a can’t-miss addition to anime’s coming-of-age pantheon.

Here’s my review of Flip Flappers.

Flip Flappers is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

29. Gatchaman Crowds

Gatchaman Crowds Best Anime List

Gatchaman’s a goddamn busy show – in the course of a 12-episode run, it covers everything from internet culture to crowdsourcing to the necessity of leadership to social responsibility to human nature to… well, you get the idea. And it explores all these ideas while also staying remarkably light and breezy – you could enjoy the show purely as a fun, visually interesting, musically brilliant adventure without even thinking about how identity is constructed in the digital age, or whatnot. And when you combine these two strengths, you get a show that proves you don’t have to be dry to be smart – you can make awesome points about how the internet will change the world without ever giving up a sense of fun and moment-to-moment excitement. Brain food and comfort food at the same time.

Here’s my review of Gatchaman Crowds.

Gatchaman Crowds is available at Amazon and streams on Crunchyroll.

28. Giant Robo

Giant Robo Best Anime List

Giant Robo is Bombast Incarnate. Featuring an epic clash between the Experts of Justice and Big Fire, there’s no room for subtlety in this production – it’s all massive robots and deadly superspies and fights for the fate of the world. It’s also a beautiful thing – a series of seven OVAs released over most of a decade, the show is a gorgeous ode to classic super robot storytelling, brought to life with strong animation and rich colors and epic orchestral scores. And yet for all its larger-than-life size, the show also tells a gripping story, full of fully-articulated characters and reflections on family and human ambition. Giant Robo essentially feels like the final act of the Greatest Robot Story Ever Told – it has absolute confidence, and earns the viewer’s trust through constant dramatic hooks and total polish in execution. Even if you generally like smaller stories, I’d give Giant Robo a chance.

Here’s my essay on Giant Robo.

Giant Robo is vaguely available on Amazon.

27. Bokurano

Bokurano manages the difficult feat of staying tonally downcast and even desolate at all times while simultaneously conveying an unflinching message of optimism, and belief in humanity as a species. Its premise is terribly arbitrary and cruel, and very few members of its young cast survive, but the stories they tell in their leaving reflect the kaleidoscopic spectrum of the human experience. Its compelling scifi narrative ultimately becomes little more than a stage for its young stars to shine, as they each take up an impossible mantel and fight on behalf of their species, their cruel guide mocking them all the while. But Bokurano does not believe in its guide’s cynicism; though the world it posits is harsh, its young heroes shine all the brighter for it.

Here’s my review of Bokurano.

Bokurano is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

26. Sound! Euphonium

Sound! Euphonium Best Anime List

Kyoto Animation excel at making quietly excellent little dramas, and Sound! Euphonium counts as one more feather in their distressingly pincushioned cap. The show is as gorgeous as you’d expect, the drama is understated but well-articulated, and the episodes are full of those alternately funny or poignant little moments that KyoAni’s mastery of animated storytelling always provokes. And Kumiko is one of the most fun people you could possibly follow around a story like this, with her snark and clumsy bluntness making her a refreshing and relatable protagonist. You can enjoy this show for its close viewing of the classic band experience, for its funny mess of jokes and characters, or for its well-articulated personal drama and reflections on goals and identity. It succeeds on all levels, making it one of the most impressive and fully realized high school dramas around.

Sound! Euphonium is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

25. Hunter x Hunter 2011

Hunter x Hunter 2011 Best Anime List

As the only long-running shounen on my list, HxH’s a bit of an outlier. But HxH is not your typical shounen – directed by Madhouse (likely my pick for the best studio of all time) and adapted from a source by the writer of Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter is basically a master class in what makes adventure entertaining. Though it starts off “only” demonstrating it knows how to make challenge-based television entertaining (in lieu of actual fights, it generally sets up compelling puzzles of all shapes and sizes for its heroes), it ends up jumping from genre to genre, dabbling in crime thriller, tournament shounen, and even war drama. And through it all, the show’s fantastic aesthetics elevate it above almost everything out there – in direction, in sound design, in pacing, in animation, in basically every relevant aesthetic metric, Hunter x Hunter triumphs. That it’s been maintaining this level of quality for well over a hundred episodes is nothing short of astonishing – in fact, I’d say Hunter x Hunter has only gotten better over time.

Here’s a critical breakdown of HxH episode 116, and here’s an essay on the recently concluded (and breathtaking) Chimera Ant arc.

Hunter x Hunter 2011 is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

24. Mushishi

Mushishi Best Anime List

Mushishi is one of those strange, special shows that seem to just emerge confident and fully constructed, exude excellence for all of their running time, and then go quietly on their way. Its vignettes are dreamy and ambiguous, full of resonance and compelling ideas but never didactic. Its world is mysterious and enchanting, evoking both a more resigned and possibly more dangerous version of Miyazaki’s mystical forests. Its production is fantastic, with beautiful backgrounds matching a wonderfully understated musical score and a great sense of pacing to conjure its powerful, singular atmosphere. And all this works in service of a show that’s fundamentally just incredibly calming and sedate – a series of long, lazy afternoons spent enjoying the company of a master storyteller.

Here’s my essay on Mushishi.

Mushishi is available at Amazon and its sequel streams on Crunchyroll.

23. Gunbuster! + Diebuster!

Gunbuster vs Diebuster Best Anime List

Grouped together because they really do feel like two sides of the same coin, both of Gainax’s Buster shows would also make this list independently. Flippant and heartbreaking, cynical and triumphant, personal and universal, each of these OVAs tells a story of humanity’s struggle against all the forces of the universe with style and heart. And each can stand alone, as well – Gunbuster is helmed by a pre-Eva Anno already exhibiting his unnerving style of direction, and Diebuster offers a very appropriate conclusion to the FLCL era of Gainax production. Only six episodes each, too – it’s pretty remarkable how much story each of these manage to tell.

Here are my essays on Gunbuster and Diebuster.

Both Gunbuster and Diebuster are available at Amazon.

22. Shinsekai Yori

Shinsekai Yori Best Anime List

Shinsekai Yori is basically tailor-made for fans of fantasy and scifi novels. Heavy on worldbuilding and questions of human nature, its story unfolds on a scale far greater than most anime, exploring a compelling dystopian society by following one generation from childhood through adolescence and well into adulthood. Though I often feel its characters fade into the background of its storytelling pretensions, it all works in service of an incredibly compelling central narrative, and its devastating conclusion justifies everything that came before. It’s a rare and valuable thing – few shows work on the scale of Shinsekai Yori.

Here’s my review of Shinsekai Yori.

Shinsekai Yori is available at Amazon and streams on Crunchyroll.

21. The Idolm@ster

The Idolmaster Best Anime List

An idol show?!? I could actually go on for a while about what makes various idol shows great (and I have), but as far as Idolm@ster specifically goes, this show is just a solid episodic drama that succeeds in almost everything it attempts. It’s got a rich and well-developed cast of characters, lots of great little character stories, and a bunch of fun adventures like “the team runs a Sunday game show” or “one idol ends up as a runaway bride while another fights yakuza goons.” On top of that, Idolm@ster features one of the best creative teams in recent memory – a bunch of former Gainax staff and other great creators combine to make this one of the most beautifully directed and animated shows I’ve seen. Even if you don’t have any interest in idols, Idolm@ster’s combination of fun stories and gorgeous execution makes it a rare and impressive show.

Here’s my review of The Idolm@ster.

The Idolm@ster is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

    • lol. shut up fanboy. they ranked steins gate 20+ and you are expecting fairy tail to be here?? quit that bullshit

      • stop being a bitch fairy tail is an awesome anime, anyway this list is broken when compared with 5 other lists. you are just a cunt

      • Please calm down, I know you’re probably 12 or something but sooner or later you have to grown up your little bitch.

  1. What an awesome list , you should also watch Kemonosume, from the same creators of The tatami galaxy, it is much more than a monster-hunting show

  2. I know you’re planning to watch this, but my all-time favorite has always been Fullmetal Alchemist (BOTH series). I cannot recommend those shows enough.

  3. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is thought provoking and brilliant; it far surpasses Fullmetal Alchemist in heart and in focus. Attack on Titan, though not yet finished, rivals Cowboy Bebop as the best of all time in my opinion and in my still-limited viewing of quality anime. Great list! Can’t wait to watch these.

    • FMA I definitely need to get to. Titan I actually have seen, and wasn’t really the biggest fan of. I hope you enjoy some of the other shows!

      • How could you not love Attack on Titan! I understand the that the concept is pretty grotesque and not for everyone, but it builds it’s characters so wonderfully and makes you feel for them and the pain they go through. I also found it very thought provoking, and left me craving for more. If you havent watched all the episodes you made a mistake because it really builds upon itself. Although if you didn’t like the opener and it failed to make you curious what happens next i don’t know how thats possible xD I never really watched anime until Attack on Titan, and infact its the reason why i’m on this list ATM, just my opinion 🙂

    • FMA is a good anime, but by no means great imo. If you think FMA is thought provoking, you’ve clearly never watched Neon-Genesis Evangelion. I’m not quite sure what’s thought provoking about FMA.

    • In terms of artistry and story and what not I actually prefer the original it was more dark emotional and less shouneny. Brotherhood bothered me because they rushed the sentimental things but it did have much better openings (except for Rewrite that’s by far the best FMA opening).

  4. Great list, many of my favourites are on it. Of those on your “Plan to watch” list, I’d fast track:

Ghost in the Shell – Stand Alone Complex
Ghost in the Shell – 2nd Gig (possibly the best series ever).
    Michiko to Hatchin
    Kaiba
    Shigofumi
    Eve no Jikan

As for films: Hotaru no Haka should go straight to the top of the list (prepare to be depressed though).

    • Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll probably be getting to Kaiba in particular very shortly – Ping Pong’s already raising my impression of Yuasa’s work even higher, and everyone seems to love Kaiba. The others are all pretty high on my list as well.

  5. what list is truly complete without death note? I very much liked the list overall though

      • hahaha… I agree, Death Note just ruined my days, it’s almost like the author intend to ruined the anime himself

      • you should Defenitly watch the anime, I useally love the manga, maybe a bit more than the anime, but the death note manga dosen’t really capture the same feel as the anime. The anime is very well done, and Madhouse did soo well on makeing death note extremly memorable name. I’m not sure where it would be on the list (if it is), but you shoud revist Death note.

  6. Thank you for the recommendations. However, I don’t see any Death Note or Attack On Titan; Shingeki no Kyojin. Besides that, I thought the list was really good.

  7. Aww basing on your ranking criteria, well such a dissapointment that Rurouni Kenshin isn’t here

  8. Great list! Most of my favorites were included so I’m happy. ^_^
If I could suggest an anime, I would suggest Rose of Versailles (if you haven’t already heard of it or saw it). It’s pretty old, but its storytelling is excellent (based on the French revolution) and it does some interesting things with gender (Utena was definitely inspired by aspects of ROV)

  9. Based on your enjoyment of romance within anime, I’d suggest Sword Art Online if you haven’t watched it already. It is quite possibly in my top 5, although I have not watched nearly as many shows as you have. It has a great protagonist and superb support characters. The story itself is rather unique, and I personally love the idea.

  10. Watch Monster by Naoki Urasawa… Probably the best out of all the series I’ve ever watched in my life, anime or not. That’s saying a lot.

  11. 10 anime better than Cowboy Bebop? Yeah, not buying it; I’ve seen a few of them. Also, I hope I just happened to overlook FMA: Brotherhood. There’s no way you left that off. Baccano! should be way higher.

  12. Nice list! Will look into some of your recommendations.

    What I am missing is

    “Elfenlied”
This one is just a beautiful, well told story about not just our human race, but as well about love and altruism. The story is a bit “over the top” at some points (and pretty gore), but I think that also makes it to what it is. It’s just 12 episodes and worth a watch. 😉
    “Death Note”
(I haven’t finished watching, and probably won’t, but the episode I’ve seen were awesome….you will understand why)
    “Hellsing” and “Hellsing Ultimate”
Just a bloody good vampire story with real monsterns and real vampires. Just fun to watch and in it’s own way “bloody” mysterious. (Ultimate has some weird Japanese humor once in a while tho)

  13. Most under-appreciated series: Mononoke. (IMHO)
If you missed it, you should watch it. Really.
If you saw this series, yet still it missed your top 30, then I don’t understand you, and I don’t understand your brain.

  14. Seem to be missing many great shows such as Bamboo Blade, Honey and Clover, Angel Beats, Death Note, Hajime no Ippo, Avatar, Berserk, Claymore, Bastard, Gunslinger Girl, Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, The Count of Monte Cristo & Studio Ghibli Movie’s as for FMA Brotherhood, Seems to me it should have been called The flame Alchemist show since it seemed to be based around the flame alchemist and not the Elric brothers unlike the first FMA which i adored =) I’m disapointed that Code Geass is in the top 30 here but recives a very critical and downing review(reminds me of that saying if you have nothing nice to say better to say…) =)) Anyways was alot of fun to read through and i found a few that i have not seen yet so i’m glad the list was made One thumb up =).

    • I’ve actually read the manga for some of those, and others are on my to-watch list.

As for Code Geass, can’t say I agree. Negative criticism is important!

  15. very nice list..loved it:)..but considering your tastes especially about people, i believe monster and gto may catch your interest

  16. Wow… I can’t believe I have never watched any of these great shows. Gintama and Clannad After Story will always be my favorites. I’m really considering to start Mushishi since so many people like it. Thank you for making this list 🙂

  17. I think you really should watch lain too its a pretty good anime .
    I like your list ^^

  18. nice list man
    it perfectly match my interest
i recommend you to watch sakurasou no pet na kanojo , you might like it since we have similiar interest . lol
thank you for making the list

  19. The popularity of this site on Google has attracted a lot of shitty commenters. Seriously these comments remind me of /r/animecirclejerk.

    • It’s pretty funny to me. Maybe I should put a “yes, I have watched Naruto and Death Note” banner across the top.

  20. I love this list! Half of my favorites are after all in this list too, but I got introduced to kids on the slope and monogatari thanks to it!

I’m surprised you havent watched honey and clover yet though. For someone who’s taste lies in well writtem characters and good character chemistry, that show is a must watch.
highly recommend it! episode 7 of the second season in particular man, struck me as a wake up call like no other. Thanks to it, I still ask myself, 1year after watching, truly what is the meaning of my life? How is everything going to turn out? 18 years of life hasnt been enough for me to truly know where I want to go. And Everything else was just beautiful and it stands as my favorite anime.

Look forward to your thoughts if you do decide to watch it!

  21. Nice list! A lot of my personal favorites are on here. However, I feel that anime such as Clannad After Story, Durarara!, One Piece, Another, Fate/Zero, and Nastume’s Book of Friends should definitely have a place in this list.

  22. really fantastic list, with pretty much all my favorites except for fma:b and death note (i know it’s been said before)

but have you tried Elfen Lied? it is a little gory but i thought it was fantastic

  23. What kind of retarded list is that , 3/4 of these anime names there are known by nobody and are seen by nobody . You cant make a top 10 list without posting the heavyweights of anime like DBZ , Naruto , One Piece , Bleach etc …

    • Ikr, never heard of these shitty animes. This list looks like it’s for the most dull, actionless, or boring animes (excluding HxH). Yet claims them to be great like a fact.

      • Except, you know, many people HAVE watched anime on these lists. Some of these anime that you’ve “never watched” are genuinely well-crafted. To make a connection, many famous artists were never popular in their own time, compared to how they were received later. By the way, if you start big opinion, anyone, I suggest that you have some really good, godly evidence and reasoning you can back it up with.

    • “You can’t make a top 10 (TV shows) list without posting the heavyweights of (TV) like Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, NCIS, etc…”

Just because they’re popular doesn’t mean they’re good. A lot of the time you sacrifice deeper elements to appeal to a broader audience.

  24. I can’t believe nobody else mentioned this yet but you HAVE TO watch Fullmetal Alchemist!!!!! It’s fully metal /and/ has alchemy! How can you not have that in your list?

    Also: Death Note!!!

  25. Nice post. I’ll be watching a couple of these thanks to you.

I agree with just over 50% of your list, but obviously it’s a list based on your preferences so I can’t really say X or Y should or shouldn’t be on it. That said here are a couple shows that haven’t already been mentioned that I’ve enjoyed (not all of which would fall in my top 30). After looking over the list it’s apparent to me now that I’m a sucker for mecha :).

Kachou Ouji: Hard Rock Save the Space
    Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
    Macross
    Rahxephon
Full Metal Panic (and it’s sequel)
Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal OAV
    Crest of the Stars

I’d also echo the others who’ve encouraged you to watch Full Metal Alchemist, it has some incredible episodes. Also, if GTO is on your list then I’d recommend watching the live action remake, it’s better in all regards.

  26. I love many of the shows you’ve put on here, and there are many more I haven’t seen yet. That’s a good combination in my book. Paranoia Agent might be up your alley too. I personally really like Satoshi Kon’s reality bending explorations of the inner workings of his characters.

  27. Love the list! but I dislike the people making comments about naruto and death note not making the list. They are more like opening animes that only spark your interest to the greater world of the anime genre, if anime series were like drugs series such as naruto would be like cigarettes or alcohol while the series in this list would be the drugs that really knock you on your ass!

    • I get the feeling a lot of people commenting are new anime fans reaching this list from google, so I’m not too surprised to get comments complaining about a lack of common gateway shows.

  28. before I say mine, shut up fairy tail fan boys, I love fairy tail, and it is my fav long anime, being a long anime, there tends to be the quality vs quatity issuse.

moveing on. I said something about death note earlier, but I also would like to being up a few others. I think Durarara was a really good anime, not even close to the top 15, but still. Attack on titan is over rated, but is still very good, it would of made it 26 imo. I would metion fairy tail, but I see that’s already a popular topic.

    • I also just finished angel beats. Didn’t make me cry, but was a cool as hell anime. After seeing this comment section escalate, I have to say that you still deserve a thumbs up on this list, it wasn’t bad.

  29. I really think FMA: Brotherhood is probably one of the best animes out there. If you look at anime in a different light like I do, in regards to how it affects one’s emotions, thoughts or actions, FMA has it all.

Here are the things I’ve taken away from FMA (Mind you I’m 29. Some of these are basic, but necessary lessons in life)

Alchemy is like life, you get what you put in, but you don’t always get exactly what you ask for.
You will go to the ends of the earth (and beyond) for family
Self sacrifice is a small price to pay to help others
We all sin differently, but they are sins nonetheless
No matter what color we are, we bleed the same
Revenge is a long and lonesome road
You don’t always win, but if you give up, you’ll never win again.
If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
If you believe a lie for long enough, it eventually becomes true.
People aren’t always who they appear to be, but they can play the role perfectly.
Love grows in the absence of time and distance.
The truth isn’t always plain to see. Sometimes it’s only what they what you to see and hear.
There are other strengths besides physical strengths.
Sacrificing others for the sake of your own gain makes you inhuman.
Anger can engulf you like flames.
The masses are fickle. The general populous is easily convinced.
There’s always a reason we smile and laugh everyday. People, memories, humor, etc.
Hate can bury your heart and your mind into your own hell.

While some people just think FMA is just another mass media anime, it’s a very provocative, thrilling, and human anime. The fight scenes are violent. The deaths memorable. The story line incredible. The rules of alchemy by itself are very interesting.

You have to watch both FMA and FMA: Brotherhood to get the whole story, but it’s an absolutely captivating anime where you have to look past the surface to get to the wonderful world of Full Metal Alchemist.

  30. I like that this is a relatively new list, and has recent anime series on here. However, the title says “of all time,” and I think the some of the newer shows on here are being rated higher because they’re still fresh in the mind. Skimming through comments, I’m seeing shows that deserve to be on this list and knock a few out.

This is a great list though, and I’m definitely going to check out some of the series that are on here! Thanks for composing this list!

  31. sup I haven’t seen allot of the stuff on the list but i plan to though i personally disagree with your number one (but i guess that my own problem ain’t it).

there are tons of anime out there but the problem is i’m South African and there is no exposure here the only anime to grace our tv screens have been Metabots, DBZ, YU-GI-Oh,Pokemon and Digimon (all Great shows in there own way) but these are mainly focused at Kids there was a time we had an Anime Channel but soon it was just Reruns but i was introduced to great shows like Ghost in the Shell, Eurika Seven, Black Lagoon, Gantz and a few more. But sadly some of the best anime was Introduced by Friends some of which are on your list

though i see you haven’t placed Soul Eater, Black Cat, Full Metal Alchemist (Both but i like Brotherhood better) Air Gear or Mahoroba Heartfelt Days (Not sure this the proper name) to your list or even pokemon (First Gen) and Digimon (First 3 season if memory serves) but i’m sure you must have seen them.

thanx for a great list and i’ll be sure to check these shows out at some point

    • Yeah, it really lacked Kunais and pink-haired girls. Damned shame. And too many words!

You could always look up what genre a show is before you watch it. In terms of a romance, I haven’t seen much better.

  32. my favorite anime of all time is by far fullmetal alchemist and also i quite enjoy hunter x hunter

  33. Watch FMA: Brotherhood. It blows the first series out of the water. Anohana and Angel Beats as well.

And to everyone complaining that Naruto isn’t on here… I am a BIG Naruto fan BUT. It is nowhere near anime like Death Note (s1), Shingeki no Kyojin, Sword Art Online and FMAB

  34. There’s a huge difference between most popular and the best which annoys me when people say Naruto Bleach Fairy Tail and One Piece are the best. Yes they are good but they lack in substance and great solid storiesBleach imo would’ve been one of the best anime’s ever made if they had ended it all the way back when they first rescued Rukia. It all just went downhill from there. Also I’m a little mad that Code Geass, Steins Gate and Cowboy Bebop are so far and that Samurai Champloo, Gurren Lagan and GITS SAC were shafted up but since NGE is number one, which it should always be (I’ll argue to my death for that one) I’ll let him slide.

  35. Fairy tail bleach naruto omari hamari sword art online dance in the vampire bun and blue exercise

  36. I’ll suggest some anime you might like, but whether you think it tops anything here is your decision. Usagi Drop, Monster(haven’t watched), Durarara, Welcome to the NHK!. If I got around to watching Serial Experiments Lain, I would recommend it; I haven’t, so check that out.

And this list has a lot of powerhouses I won’t argue with. Nice.

  37. This is a sentient blog infested with the posts of internet rabble postulating themselves into silly over-generalized opinions like myself.

Now, being serious, I agree with most of this list. It’s well thought out. However, have you watched Serial Experiments Lain? Or Welcome to the NHK? I suggest you skim them, at the very least.

    • I enjoyed Serial Experiments Lain, and it’d probably be my top show after this list. I loved the NHK manga, and will have to watch the anime as well at some point.
