Top 30 Anime Series of All Time

Yep, I’ve finally put together a top shows list. As I hopefully made clear in part one and part two of my critical biases post, this is obviously my list – it represents the things I think are most valuable in stories in the way I think they’ve best been articulated. It’s also just a list of shows I enjoy – there’s no hard criteria here, so I wouldn’t stress the numbers too much. Also, it’s a bit front-loaded – I only started watching anime seasonally about two years ago, so the last couple years are disproportionately represented. Incidentally, I’m not including movies here either – I think direct comparisons between shows and films are a bit of a stretch, but if they were included, this list would certainly be somewhat different. And finally, I’m absolutely (and thankfully) certain this list will change over time – there are still piles of widely beloved shows I’ve never seen, so I’m sure the current rankings will be filled out in the years to come. So with that all said, let’s get to the list – Bobduh’s Top 30 Anime of All Time.

-edit- I have now created a Top Shows Addendum for shows that have either fallen off or just barely missed this list. Please enjoy these additional almost-top shows!

30. Flip Flappers

Flip Flappers marries the blossoming artistic vision of many of anime’s most talented young animators to a story teeming with the rich psychological inquiry that anime does so well. Centered on a girl on the verge of young adulthood who feels too paralyzed by consequences to decide who she wants to be, Flip Flappers takes her on a wild adventure through a series of evocative alternate realities, all of which ultimately reflect back on the human interiority of her own world. Flip Flappers appreciates the inherent beauty of our distinct internal worlds, and pairs a wild tour through the human experience with a core character arc that reflects thoughtfully on the complexity of love, identity, and growing up. Slotting somewhere thematically between FLCL and Evangelion, it is a can’t-miss addition to anime’s coming-of-age pantheon.

Here’s my review of Flip Flappers.

Flip Flappers is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

29. Gatchaman Crowds

Gatchaman Crowds Best Anime List

Gatchaman’s a goddamn busy show – in the course of a 12-episode run, it covers everything from internet culture to crowdsourcing to the necessity of leadership to social responsibility to human nature to… well, you get the idea. And it explores all these ideas while also staying remarkably light and breezy – you could enjoy the show purely as a fun, visually interesting, musically brilliant adventure without even thinking about how identity is constructed in the digital age, or whatnot. And when you combine these two strengths, you get a show that proves you don’t have to be dry to be smart – you can make awesome points about how the internet will change the world without ever giving up a sense of fun and moment-to-moment excitement. Brain food and comfort food at the same time.

Here’s my review of Gatchaman Crowds.

Gatchaman Crowds is available at Amazon and streams on Crunchyroll.

28. Giant Robo

Giant Robo Best Anime List

Giant Robo is Bombast Incarnate. Featuring an epic clash between the Experts of Justice and Big Fire, there’s no room for subtlety in this production – it’s all massive robots and deadly superspies and fights for the fate of the world. It’s also a beautiful thing – a series of seven OVAs released over most of a decade, the show is a gorgeous ode to classic super robot storytelling, brought to life with strong animation and rich colors and epic orchestral scores. And yet for all its larger-than-life size, the show also tells a gripping story, full of fully-articulated characters and reflections on family and human ambition. Giant Robo essentially feels like the final act of the Greatest Robot Story Ever Told – it has absolute confidence, and earns the viewer’s trust through constant dramatic hooks and total polish in execution. Even if you generally like smaller stories, I’d give Giant Robo a chance.

Here’s my essay on Giant Robo.

Giant Robo is vaguely available on Amazon.

27. Bokurano

Bokurano manages the difficult feat of staying tonally downcast and even desolate at all times while simultaneously conveying an unflinching message of optimism, and belief in humanity as a species. Its premise is terribly arbitrary and cruel, and very few members of its young cast survive, but the stories they tell in their leaving reflect the kaleidoscopic spectrum of the human experience. Its compelling scifi narrative ultimately becomes little more than a stage for its young stars to shine, as they each take up an impossible mantel and fight on behalf of their species, their cruel guide mocking them all the while. But Bokurano does not believe in its guide’s cynicism; though the world it posits is harsh, its young heroes shine all the brighter for it.

Here’s my review of Bokurano.

Bokurano is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

26. Sound! Euphonium

Sound! Euphonium Best Anime List

Kyoto Animation excel at making quietly excellent little dramas, and Sound! Euphonium counts as one more feather in their distressingly pincushioned cap. The show is as gorgeous as you’d expect, the drama is understated but well-articulated, and the episodes are full of those alternately funny or poignant little moments that KyoAni’s mastery of animated storytelling always provokes. And Kumiko is one of the most fun people you could possibly follow around a story like this, with her snark and clumsy bluntness making her a refreshing and relatable protagonist. You can enjoy this show for its close viewing of the classic band experience, for its funny mess of jokes and characters, or for its well-articulated personal drama and reflections on goals and identity. It succeeds on all levels, making it one of the most impressive and fully realized high school dramas around.

Sound! Euphonium is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

25. Hunter x Hunter 2011

Hunter x Hunter 2011 Best Anime List

As the only long-running shounen on my list, HxH’s a bit of an outlier. But HxH is not your typical shounen – directed by Madhouse (likely my pick for the best studio of all time) and adapted from a source by the writer of Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter is basically a master class in what makes adventure entertaining. Though it starts off “only” demonstrating it knows how to make challenge-based television entertaining (in lieu of actual fights, it generally sets up compelling puzzles of all shapes and sizes for its heroes), it ends up jumping from genre to genre, dabbling in crime thriller, tournament shounen, and even war drama. And through it all, the show’s fantastic aesthetics elevate it above almost everything out there – in direction, in sound design, in pacing, in animation, in basically every relevant aesthetic metric, Hunter x Hunter triumphs. That it’s been maintaining this level of quality for well over a hundred episodes is nothing short of astonishing – in fact, I’d say Hunter x Hunter has only gotten better over time.

Here’s a critical breakdown of HxH episode 116, and here’s an essay on the recently concluded (and breathtaking) Chimera Ant arc.

Hunter x Hunter 2011 is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

24. Mushishi

Mushishi Best Anime List

Mushishi is one of those strange, special shows that seem to just emerge confident and fully constructed, exude excellence for all of their running time, and then go quietly on their way. Its vignettes are dreamy and ambiguous, full of resonance and compelling ideas but never didactic. Its world is mysterious and enchanting, evoking both a more resigned and possibly more dangerous version of Miyazaki’s mystical forests. Its production is fantastic, with beautiful backgrounds matching a wonderfully understated musical score and a great sense of pacing to conjure its powerful, singular atmosphere. And all this works in service of a show that’s fundamentally just incredibly calming and sedate – a series of long, lazy afternoons spent enjoying the company of a master storyteller.

Here’s my essay on Mushishi.

Mushishi is available at Amazon and its sequel streams on Crunchyroll.

23. Gunbuster! + Diebuster!

Gunbuster vs Diebuster Best Anime List

Grouped together because they really do feel like two sides of the same coin, both of Gainax’s Buster shows would also make this list independently. Flippant and heartbreaking, cynical and triumphant, personal and universal, each of these OVAs tells a story of humanity’s struggle against all the forces of the universe with style and heart. And each can stand alone, as well – Gunbuster is helmed by a pre-Eva Anno already exhibiting his unnerving style of direction, and Diebuster offers a very appropriate conclusion to the FLCL era of Gainax production. Only six episodes each, too – it’s pretty remarkable how much story each of these manage to tell.

Here are my essays on Gunbuster and Diebuster.

Both Gunbuster and Diebuster are available at Amazon.

22. Shinsekai Yori

Shinsekai Yori Best Anime List

Shinsekai Yori is basically tailor-made for fans of fantasy and scifi novels. Heavy on worldbuilding and questions of human nature, its story unfolds on a scale far greater than most anime, exploring a compelling dystopian society by following one generation from childhood through adolescence and well into adulthood. Though I often feel its characters fade into the background of its storytelling pretensions, it all works in service of an incredibly compelling central narrative, and its devastating conclusion justifies everything that came before. It’s a rare and valuable thing – few shows work on the scale of Shinsekai Yori.

Here’s my review of Shinsekai Yori.

Shinsekai Yori is available at Amazon and streams on Crunchyroll.

21. The Idolm@ster

The Idolmaster Best Anime List

An idol show?!? I could actually go on for a while about what makes various idol shows great (and I have), but as far as Idolm@ster specifically goes, this show is just a solid episodic drama that succeeds in almost everything it attempts. It’s got a rich and well-developed cast of characters, lots of great little character stories, and a bunch of fun adventures like “the team runs a Sunday game show” or “one idol ends up as a runaway bride while another fights yakuza goons.” On top of that, Idolm@ster features one of the best creative teams in recent memory – a bunch of former Gainax staff and other great creators combine to make this one of the most beautifully directed and animated shows I’ve seen. Even if you don’t have any interest in idols, Idolm@ster’s combination of fun stories and gorgeous execution makes it a rare and impressive show.

Here’s my review of The Idolm@ster.

The Idolm@ster is available streaming on Crunchyroll.

2,750 thoughts on “Top 30 Anime Series of All Time

    • You can’t even spell correctly, your logic is invalid. Naruto isn’t horrible, but it’s no where near the best anime ever.

      • Naruto is decent for like 100 episodes and then you realize how incredibly long it is, its filled with fillers and battles last like 20 episodes each, so its definitely not the best anime ever, death note was 37 episodes long and it has an amazing plot and keeps you amused, full metal alchemist is the same, but naruto is just crappy shit that males with no sense of anime watch, just because of explosions and fights every second.

    • I saw a website which rated Naruto 3 stars/5. The same website rated Stein’s gate and Death Note 5/5, so it’s probably right.

    • Yeah man like death note is a great anime, it’s the best in my opinion, :p

    • Yeah dude, FMA Brotherhood all the way.Shame not even mentioned even with all of its awards and fame. Probably because this person didn’t wanna sound “too mainstream”.

      • That’s fine by me. I, at least, came here trying to get some ideas for some new anime to watch. Seeing the “mainstream” anime is just a waste of a slot for people like me. That said, yes, FMA B is pretty damn awesome.

  1. shiki is BY FAR one of the most horrible creations i have ever encountered. it made me question ur judgement in all the other animes i didnt know.

    • I didn’t like Shiki for the first half, but when I finished I thought it was amazing. I find it genuinely disturbing without having to try too hard (though the OVA leans there).

  2. I find your list to be refreshing and different. Not a lot of people mention Monogatari and I didnt see madoka magica even being on the list.. whats nice is you comprised not only some of your favorites but also just plain good animes that everyone should check out.. I’d like to see your list for recent animes.. say 2012+

  3. Uhm error!!….. Clannad!!! Is the essence of people and and understanding emotions. Where is Death note, mirrai nikki and how the fuck a few power ranger colour little girls eclipse the the all action and freshness that is Gurren Lagann. Btw its not the process of Rosiu peaks the anime you smart ass. Its the absence of Kamina! Its good to be different with your listing but when you overlook actual good animes I draw the line. Where the fuck is attack on titan for god’s sake

  5. This one isn’t that popular, by the looks of the internet, but I absolutely loved it: Wolf’s Rain

  6. What about Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Clannad and Clannad: After Story?!

    • OK, just to address the animes everybody is about. I said this earlier, but you do have to consider the quality vs quantity factor. Most long anime in spend less time on each episode in order to make more. It doesn’t make the anime crap, but it makes it harder to compare to more finely crafted animes. I love Fairy Tail to death, and it’s my favorite long anime, but it starts to loss it’s edge as it got longer, yes, it did pick back up at points, but it got kind of sloppy. I am currently watching bleach, and it is also very good. But is not very fined tuned at all. The newer episodes have gotten better, but it needs to be consistent. I can’t talk about Naruto, I saw the original and only the first part of Shippuden, but stopped there. And one piece is way to long for its own good. I love it, but there are other animes that offer what one piece does that doesn’t last forever. I’ll cut Dragon Ball Z some slack and say it was and older anime, and was pretty good for going without a manga made before hand. But DBZ is past its prime at this point. Just about the same goes for FMA (it was still awesome though).

Last but not least, attack on Titan. Ok, I’ll admit, I thought it would be on the list, but I know why it isn’t. It was really well made, and would be at 26 if it was my list. But please don’t say it’s number one. Keep in mind that a lot of people who watched AOT don’t watch anime, and say it’s the best. Because of how good the anime is, people that watch anime may not disagree. It’s the same as when dragon ball z was popular.

And sword art online was good, but for an action genre, it didn’t quite meet the standards. It was good none the less.

    • these were all interesting but they will never be within the top 30 anime of all time, except attack on titan, everrrrrrrr. spice and wolf>sao, bleach, and one piece so go watch it

  7. Death Note, No Game No Life, SAO, Black Bullet, Bleach, Pokemon, Naruto, One Piece, DBZ, Vampire Knight, Dance in the Vampire Bund, Rosario plus Vampire? Dude your list isnt that good at all

  8. It’s funny because most of the comments refer to ongoing shows. And it’s funny to see people getting mad because One Piece, Bleach or Naruto aren’t in the list (they’re good but as good as the manga and even so aren’t great). This list is the choice of one and we all have limits and likings … I would say DBZ is a must (but given the choice read it… we all know about these episodes were nothing would happen but Gohan focusing to get the energy from every living forms). To those who liked Psycho Pass, if they haven’t yet, they should watch Ghost in the Shell. For the Mecha fan I would say I liked Gundam SEED even if 00 is a good anime (and watch Macross Frontier just to know about both franchise). Still in the Mecha list you also have Full Metal Panic and Black Lagoon for the pure action.

Now to me the three I would add are:
-School rumble for being one of the most crazy anime ever and because Harima Kenji has one hell of a life.
-Berserk, the badass warrior killer of a hundred. (I think the story is deeper than it seems to be when you focus on the main character, his goals and his view about life. He’s dead inside as he has nothing and dreams of nothing. But like a beast he fights to survive, and survives as he only knows how to fight.)
-The Legend of Galactic Heroes behind this unlikely title is a SF masterpiece produced at the end of the 80’s. The anime comes from Yoshiki Tanaka’s novels. I won’t say anything about the story, it’s up to you to find if you like it or if you don’t…

  9. I enjoy your lists, reviews and thoughts on almost any post you write, and i wish someday after watching so much anime i can get an insight as good as yours,
I’d like to know what are your thoughts on Kokoro Connect, i really like the character development
but i’d be great to hear what you think about it

      • Bobduh I think you will really like Kokoro Connect.

NGE and Tatami Galaxy are also in my all-time top 5 and I absolutely loved Kokoro Connect (complete with the last 4 “Michi Random” episodes)

  10. really disappointing ‘top anime’ list..

Although I saw many of my favorite anime on the list, it’s impossible to agree with their rankings. This list is biased, to an extreme point. It doesn’t list what the author believes to be the ‘top anime,’ just his favorites. The author is a rebel, refusing to put the most popular anime in the mix or near the top rankings only because he wants his list to feel special.

    Disgusting.

    • The most popular anime aren’t necessarily good. Miley Cyrus is popular but her music is crap. You have no way of knowing whether he intended it to just be his favorites, you’re being biased toward him being biased which makes your argument invalid.

    • The whole point is there IS no difference between what constitutes a top anime and what constitutes a favorite. It is absurd to suggest that someone should fill a top anime list with shows they don’t like.

  11. Wow, you can tell this is near the top of a couple google searches, judging by some of the comments <_<. Lots of great picks on here, and I really love the way you summarize them. I'm a big fan of the way you write!

      • I kind of regret choosing to get e-mail notices on the comments.

Long ago, my e-mail lived in a land of peace. That all changed when the Google Nation attacked. (Avatar reference)

  12. Not a bad list at all, really. I’ve not seen a lot on here; I must remedy this.

I’ve not seen anyone mention XXXHolic, which I thought was wise and rather thought-provoking at times. I mean, sure; CLAMP usually makes people only think of some series such as Chobits, Cardcaptor Sakura, or Magic Knight Rayearth. Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle was also pretty good…such great music to go with that series…. (“A Song of Storm and Fire” and “Ship of Fools” being personal favorites) If you have not seen them, I would highly recommend them!

  13. Berzerk is top 30 for sure. If you like character development, I am surprised this is not on the list.

  14. An..interesting..comment section you’ve got there. The HST craze is rather strong for your anon viewing populace.

Anyway, liked the list. Has a lot of recent shows; so I’m kind of torn on whether this actually counts as an all time list. Btw, when you say anime, you literally mean TV aired anime only? No OVA or anything? Because in an all time list, the lack of classics such as Legend of Galactic Heroes is a surprise. Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen is also one of those shows I feel are a must in all time best list, and IMHO, Psycho Pass doesn’t compare to Ghost in the Shell series, be it as a cyberpunk anime, or as an anime at all.

    • He is including OVA (Gunbuster and Diebuster). He hasn’t seen Galactic Heroes, but has seen Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen. I was kind of surprised it wasn’t on here as well. I thought it was quite good. Nothing really new in that story, it all sort of felt like something I’ve seen before, but the characters, story, and execution were all really well done and the show as a whole was well realized. I certainly thought it was better than Haruhi, but this list is full of some pretty tough competitors.

      • Tsuiokuhen might make it on if I were to rewatch it. I just haven’t seen it in too long to feel confident in my opinion on it.

  15. Thanks for the list! It was clearly very well thought out, and there are a lot of anime that I have not seen(though I’m somewhat new to anime, so this isn’t surprising). A couple anime that I really liked, but didn’t see on your list were Soul Eater, and Trigun, so If you haven’t seen them, you should check ’em out! Also: The black haired girl from Madoka is badass 🙂

  16. No Game No Life is amazing so far, even though only 9 episodes are out atm (#10’s gonna be released tomorrow, 8:30 AM!!!) Their jokes are spot on, right from the first episode (min/maxing through white bread. lol. Maybe I just min/max so much in MMO’s that I found it inordinately funny). Their characters are well-crafted and, believe it or not, more realistic than you’d think, given the premises (I bet I’m not the only one with a sibling who watches too much South Park et alia). The premises themselves are very appealing, at least to me, and probably to most other gamers. I hope it gets added to your list as soon as season 1 finishes.

    • I’m pretty sure he’s answered in his ask.fm that he really isn’t into NGNL so I wouldn’t hold your breath!

“I think NGNL is basically just a very polished archetypal light novel adaptation – SAO gaming-world appeal + Death Note chessmaster appeal + OreImo fanservice/anime joke appeal. I can see why it’s popular, but I personally don’t find anything it’s doing funny or interesting, and the reaaally heavy focus on fanservice, blunt reference humor, and “aren’t our protagonists awesome” all just really turns me off. It’s steeped in a worldview I find extremely repellent.”

      From http://ask.fm/B0bduh/answer/112964732970

      • Yeah, that’s a pretty spot on summary of the series. Every single female character in the show is really lacking, and whenever they’re not lacking the show is trying to remind us to not take them seriously. Especially god damn Steph. Her character is just pure typical archetype bullshit, and a long string of very tired and overused jokes.

  17. The list is great, though it mainly character oriented. Those who say that the list is bad are naive and unexperienced;new to anime world.Bleach is nothing infront of steins gate also.Naruto and One piece are refreshing, but not great.DBZ has poor story line. But one thing that is disappointing that death note is missing and FMA brotherhood is missing.Their characters are well developed

  18. Awesome list!!! You definitely hit some of my favorites, and in the “right” order too. I appreciate the variety of setting, so I have a lot to choose from. Thanks!

  19. Awesome list. I’m happy to see a lot of my favorites up here so I’ve definitely got to check out everything in your top 10!

When you read reviews and top 10 lists it’s really important to understand what the reviewer finds compelling in art. Usually it comes down to reading each little snippet about the shows and kinda piecing things together, but it’s obviously different for you. Just wanted to say that I really appreciate you taking the time to lay out for your readers what matters to you and how impossible/meaningless it is to try to interpret art outside of that frame. It’s pretty exciting for me to see someone who is very much in aware of their own relationship between themselves and their media write out what makes them tick, especially if you find their writing engaging.

Wait, I mean “dude wtf whers death note and attack on titan they really understand people and you obvioulsy just don’t get what is good why do you like these other animes just cause no one else does. ur list is shit bro”

Seriously though, I feel obligated to criticize your list because of all of these other comments so here it goes… Sekai Seifuku should be up there around 25ish. How does that feel?

    • Thank you! I’m glad you appreciate what I try to do with all the preliminary writing – that’s what I’d want to see in a list, so I’m happy someone else feels the same way.

  20. The lack of “Wolf’s Rain” made this list bad imo.
And then there’s “The 12 Kingdoms” (Juuni Kokki) that you probably haven’t even seen.

  21. I see that Kemono no Souja Erin is on your To Watch list. I definitely recommend it. As with Shinsekai Yori, when I was watching it I got the feeling that it was probably based off of a fantasy novel – and sure enough when I looked it up, it was!

  22. Wow. Nice list you have there! And it’s awesome you have HxH and Hyouka on this list (my top 3 anime!)
I’m on my way to finish NGE, but I can say that I don’t really like it. NGE definitely lower than HxH and YYH on my list. The heavy fan service is killing me! Seriously? Every single episode is fan service parade! And agree with you about NGE (painful) truth. I think Ano experience about being depressed really help (ironic huh)
I disagree with Love, Chunibyou and other delusions being in this list. It’s shit. The characters are horrible. But yeah the romance is the best out there!!
Oh and one thing, I bet HxH rate will go up! the ending of Chimera Ant Arc is mind blowing!
And guys seriously? Fairy Tail, Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece (anime) is shit. I dropped it like years ago, the only good shonen (anime) out there is Hunter X Hunter.

  23. where is toward the terra and uchuu senkan yamato 2199? you have a good list though. i love shinsekai yori too and i heard the original novel was superior

  24. A few months ago I decided to sift through some “Top Anime Series” lists, and I felt it necessary to say that this is probably the best list I’ve read. Even though I’ve only seen maybe fifteen percent of the animes listed, the way you describe them is so helpful in figuring out what to watch next (pretty sure all of these are on my list now). Whenever I read these lists I’m always curious to see what comes out on top, and NGE is almost always somewhere high on lists, and usually just because it’s NGE and it “must” be included. The description you gave it really captured why it’s the most amazing anime I’ve ever seen, even though I haven’t seen very many, and that’s probably the reason why I’ll try to watch a big chunk of this list. I usually don’t comment on things, but for some reason I felt it necessary to tell you how successful this was.

  25. Wow. Nice list you have there! And it’s awesome you have HxH and Hyouka on this list (my top 3 anime!)

I just completed NGE, and I have really mixed feeling about it. It’s good, but is it really that good? I seriously can’t judge or score NGE. NGE is way too personal and it’s really a different kind of anime. Not that NGE is good, it just different and can’t be judged. I think the plot and the characters are not that good. But the pshylogical aspect of it is top notch! (Especially the one regarding depression, because NGE is about depression nothing more nothing less)

I disagree with Love, Chunibyou and other delusions being in this list. It’s shit. The characters are horrible. But yeah the romance is the best out there!

Oh and have you watch or read the end of Chimera Ant Arc? It’s masterpiece! I bet HxH rank go up after you see it!

And guys seriously? Fairy Tail, Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece (anime) is shit. I dropped it like years ago, the only good shonen (anime) out there is Hunter X Hunter.
